- The Flathead County Animal Shelter does
NOT charge a fee for unwanted animals taken
to that facility.
- It is against the law to leave animals behind when
moving.
- It is against the law to leave young or adult animals at
the county green box dump sites.
- It is against the law to abandon a helpless animal in
any place where it can get injured, hungry, suffer from
exposure or cause problems for the community.
Animals
that are used to being taken care of by humans cannot survive
by themselves. Abandoning them in the woods or in
farm country is illegal and very cruel. They are
not "being given a chance to live". They are being
consigned to a death by injury, predation, starvation or
worse. The people who live in farm country already
have enough animals and not need to take in abandoned
ones.
The rare animal that does manange to survive
looks forward to a short life prone to disease and
injury. Small wild animals can be decimated by some
domestic animals causing a lack of food necessary for owls,
hawks and other wildlife to survive.
If a companion
animal is not wanted, do NOT abandon
it. If an appropriate home cannot be found, then
take it to the Flathead County Animal Shelter which is open
Tuesday through Saturday, 11 am - 4 pm. The shelter
is located at 225 Cemetary Road south of
Kalispell. For more information, call (406)
752-1310.
